Unemployment: After a decline to 6.7% in January 2025, the unemployment rate rose to 7.1% in March, and was around 7.2% by May Statistics Canada
Participation rate: Sustained at a modest ~69%, constrained by slower business hiring and an aging workforce .
2. Workforce Demographics & Migration
Population surge: Alberta continues to lead Canada in interprovincial migration – net gain of ~43,750 people in 2023–24 alone. That surge boosted labour force growth but outpaced job creation, putting upward pressure on unemployment.
Youth workforce: Youth unemployment (ages 15–24) is particularly acute at ~17% in May 2025, compared to 14% nationally.
Services Sectors
Accommodation & food services added ~11,500 jobs in 2024, surpassing pre‑COVID levels.
Public administration grew by ~11,300 jobs; health care & social assistance, as well as manufacturing, each added over 10,000 roles.
The professional, scientific & technical services sector has seen rapid growth (up ~15% between 2021–2022, ~28,700 jobs), driven by digital and advisory roles.
4. Wages & Productivity
Average weekly earnings (AWE) rose 3.5% in 2024, the fastest pace in a decade and outpacing inflation — though many lower-wage sectors still struggled.
In energy extraction, AWE averaged $2,970/week (+2.3%).
In management and arts/entertainment, earnings grew ~10.3%, reaching $2,171 and $733, respectively.
Productivity: Value per hour dipped ~1% in Alberta in 2024, part of broader Canadian trends. Still, Alberta maintains the highest productivity among provinces — largely due to resource-sector output.
5. Labour Shortages & Skills Demand
A tightening market in 2025 due to mega-projects and national labour constraints is expected to drive further wage pressure (~3.6% wage rises forecast) and increase reliance on skilled foreign workers in trades such as crane operators, pipefitters, and scaffolders.
Digital skills are in high demand: roles like data analysts, software developers, and business intelligence professionals are among the fastest‑growing occupations. Logistics/warehousing also continues to expand post‑pandemic demand.
Rising demand in healthcare, especially for home‑health aides and licensed practical nurses, as the population ages and shortages persist .
