B.C.’s Labour Force and Employment Rates
In November 2024, British Columbia’s labour force reached approximately 3.003 million individuals, marking a 0.8% increase from the previous year. The province’s unemployment rate stood at 5.4% in December 2024, below the national average of 6.7%, positioning B.C. among the provinces with the lowest unemployment rates in the country.
The services sector dominates B.C.’s employment landscape, accounting for about 80% of jobs. Within this sector, wholesale and retail trade represent 15%, while health care and social assistance comprise 12%. The goods-producing sector, including construction and manufacturing, accounts for a smaller portion of employment.
British Columbia Regional Employment Variations
Employment rates vary across regions. For instance, the Vancouver Island and Coast region experienced a 3.2% increase in employment compared to the previous year, the highest percentage growth among B.C. regions. Unemployment rates also differ regionally, with the Kootenay region reporting the lowest at 3.0% and the Cariboo region the highest at 6.2%.
B.C.’s Labour Market Outlook
